Overview
Vietnam is a captivating destination for tourists, offering a rich tapestry of natural beauty, historical sites, and vibrant cultural experiences. The country’s diverse geography ranges from lush rice terraces and misty mountains in the north to pristine beaches and bustling cities in the south.
Hanoi
In the north, Hanoi, the capital city, is a blend of old and new, where you can wander through the historic Old Quarter with its narrow streets, ancient temples, and French colonial architecture. Notable landmarks include the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, dedicated to the revered leader, and the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university. For a complete experience, consider a Vietnam tour package that includes guided tours of these iconic sites.
Ninh Binh
Ninh Binh is often referred to as “Ha Long Bay on land” for its stunning karst landscapes and tranquil rivers. Here, visitors can explore the Tam Coc caves by boat, visit the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, and hike up to Mua Cave for panoramic views.
Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a must-see with its emerald waters and thousands of limestone karsts and islets, offering boat cruises, kayaking, and breathtaking views.
Da Nang & Hoi An
Central Vietnam boasts the ancient town of Hoi An, another UNESCO site, known for its well-preserved architecture, quaint lantern-lit streets, and bustling tailor shops. Nearby, the imperial city of Hue offers a journey back in time with its vast complex of palaces, temples, and gardens, all set along the scenic Perfume River. The region is also home to the stunning Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, renowned for its impressive caves and grottoes, including the world’s largest cave, Son Doong.
Ho Chi Minh
In the south, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) pulses with energy and offers a fascinating mix of historic and modern attractions. Key sites include the bustling Ben Thanh Market, the poignant War Remnants Museum, and the intricate Cu Chi Tunnels, which provide a glimpse into the Vietnam War era. The nearby Mekong Delta is a vibrant, water-world where you can explore floating markets, traditional villages, and lush landscapes by boat. A well-planned Vietnam trip often features these highlights, offering a deep dive into both the history and vibrant life of this dynamic region.
Sa Pa
Sa Pa, nestled amidst the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, captivates with its terraced rice fields, vibrant hill tribe cultures, and trekking adventures. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local way of life, explore ethnic minority villages, and conquer Fansipan, Indochina’s highest peak, for breathtaking panoramic views.
Cao Bang
Cao Bang Province, in Vietnam’s remote northeast, beckons with its pristine natural beauty and rich historical sites. From the majestic Ban Gioc Waterfall to the intricate Nguom Ngao Cave and the historic Pac Bo Cave, where Ho Chi Minh resided during the struggle for independence, Cao Bang offers a journey through Vietnam’s past and present.
Vietnam Through The Seasons:
Overall, there is not really a right or wrong time to visit Vietnam as during most months of the year you will experience both sunshine and rain in varying quantities – it is a country with 2000 + miles of coastline and three different weather systems after all.
Whilst Vietnam is typically warm and humid, the weather can vary significantly from one region to another due to the country’s length. At times there has been snow (yes white snow!) in the mountainous far north whilst the beaches in the south enjoyed 32 °C and sunshine. The best time to visit Vietnam depends on what you want to experience. Here’s what you can expect in each region:
Getting There
By Air:
The most common way to reach Vietnam is by air through direct or one stop flights from major cities in India like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata
There are cheap flights from India to Noi Bai International Airport, Hanoi
Alternatively, one can also fly to Da Nang International Airport in Da Nang & Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh
Domestic Travel In Vietnam:
The best way to travel between Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh is via a domestic flight.
To regions like Ha Long Bay, Sa Pa, Ninh Bin travellers can opt for private taxi or a shared van/bus.
Within Vietnam the best way to travel is either to walk, as most of the sightseeing attraction are close by, or take a bicycle or rent a motorbike. Alternatively, you can also book a taxi via Grab (the Ola & Uber of South East Asia)
Stay and Dining
Sa Pa: We recommend staying away from the main centre at any of the resorts overlooking the rice terraces and gardens or opting for an authentic homestay experience by staying with the local Hmong Tribe.
Hanoi: We recommended staying in Hanoi Old Quarters where all the action is. Hanoi Old Quarters has several 3/4 Star hotels to choose from but be mindful that as this is in the centre of the city, the hotels are narrow, the rooms small, with the basic category rooms not having a window.
Hoi An: We recommended staying in 3/4 star at a walking distance to Hoi An Ancient town. Alternatively you can choose to stay at beach side resorts near Cua Dai Beach which are around 5 Kms from Hoi An Ancient town
Ho Chi Minh: We recommended staying in the centre where all the action is. Ho Chi Minh has several 3/4 Star hotels to choose from but be mindful that as this is in the centre of the city, the hotels are narrow, the rooms small, with the basic category rooms not having a window.
Food: Vietnamese cuisine offers a diverse array of flavors and dishes. Some highlights include Pho, a popular noodle soup; Banh Mi, a delicious sandwich; Bun Cha, grilled pork with rice noodles; Goi Cuon, fresh spring rolls; Com Tam, broken rice with grilled meats; Cao Lau, thick noodles with pork; Cha Ca, grilled fish with herbs; Banh Xeo, savory pancakes; Bun Bo Hue, spicy beef noodle soup; and Vietnamese Coffee, strong coffee with condensed milk over ice. These dishes represent just a taste of Vietnam’s rich and diverse culinary heritage.
